Drive nearly anywhere andthe work of the Engineer is there to see. As the county's surveyor and civil engineer, the Engineer designs, constructs and maintains the county road system, including county bridges, guardrails, traffic signals, and signs. The Engineer also works with the township trustees in maintaining township roads.

Funded primarily through state motor vehicle license fees and gasoline taxes, the Engineer's office maintains the Auditor's tax maps used for reviewing deeds, land transfers, and lot splits. The Engineer spends a lot of time on drainage improvement projects, or ditches.
